This summer, Wingler Construction & Remodeling had the opportunity to work on a 4-month remodeling project for a local veteran. Mr. Houston, who suffers from Lou Gehrig’s disease, needed a room addition to make his home more accommodating. He applied for a home remodeling grant through the Columbus Veterans Affairs office, and we decided to take on the project. We met with Mr. Houston to inspect his home, gave the VA office an estimate, and then got to work. Here’s how we updated his home:

Room addition:

First, we built a 26 x 18 ft bedroom addition on the back of Mr. Houston’s house. His bedroom, bathroom, and closet are all on one level now.

Bathroom with ADA specifications:

We also added a new bathroom with ADA accommodations—a walk-in shower with a bench, a commode, grab bars, and doorways that can accommodate his wheelchair.

New deck:

Finally, we installed a deck with a ramp on the back of Mr. Houston’s house. We finished the room addition with siding, gutters, downspouts, windows, and the roof. We also replaced the existing siding on the rest of the house so it would match.
